For the first time in John Carroll history, two journalism students in the same year have been named Sweepstakes winners by the Quill and Scroll International Honor Society. Placing first in their respective categories out of 1,938 total entries, Senior Mitchell Hopkins was the Sweepstakes winner for his front page design of "The Gun Issue" and junior Caroline Cooney was the Sweepstakes winner for the editorial writing of her article "Islam Deserves Understanding." Cooney was also named National winner for sports photography in the article "Preview of Football Championships."
Mr. Mark Ionescu '95, moderator of The Patriot student newspaper, remarked, "I'm incredibly proud of Mitch and Caroline's exceptional work - they embody the best qualities of The Patriot and John Carroll. The fact that both of them were honored with such prestigious awards in the same year is an unprecedented and well-deserved accomplishment. The wide range of the awards, across multiple disciplines of photography, design, and writing, is reflective of the great range of talents and achievements from this year's staff overall."
