DanHentschel’s high school filmmaking career ended on the highest note possible, as his film “Town Painters” won a First Place at the Baltimore High School Film Festival! This is a highly competitive festival, with 99 films entered from all over the Baltimore metro area, and only 24 even being accepted. Judges include Lee Gardner (former editor of the City Paper), Marc Steiner (host of a Peabody Award-winning radio show on NPR), and Steve Yeager (winner of a Best Documentary award at Sundance). Dan has had films accepted by this festival each of the last two years, but the third time was a charm as his film won the Narrative Short category in this, his senior year. So not only did Dan get the thrill of seeing his film on the big screen at the historic Charles Theater, but he also took home a First Place, which carried a $200 award.
Dan was somewhat of a star during the Q&A that followed the screening, being peppered with questions about lighting, his shooting technique, and even “How did you make such a great film on such a low budget?” He represented John Carroll well, giving informed answers with his usual humor.
