The Fall Sports Award and Recognition Ceremony took place at The John Carroll School on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. During the evening event, the Triple Threat Award Recipients were announced.Coaches nominated players for this award based on the following criteria about each nominee:
· Works to make herself or himself better· Makes teammates better· Strives to make the game better Congratulations go out to the following athletes, chosen as The Triple Threat Award Recipients. Go Patriots!Cheerleading Varsity – This was a very hard decision choosing who should receive this award. This cheerleader always kept the girls smiling and in a good mood. She always tried to be positive even when things were going wrong. She even went to the JV football games to support the cheerleaders. She had perfect attendance this season and attended all the fundraisers to help raise money for our competitions. This shows true dedication to the team. This year’s Varsity cheerleading triple threat award goes to Kaitlin DiRocco.
Cheerleading JV – This award goes to someone I truly believe deserves the recognition. This cheerleaders stepped up last year and learned our entire routine minutes before a competition to fill in for an injured cheerleader. This year, she started as a base and when asked to be a back, she answered “I’ve never backed before but show me how and I’ll do it”. She always helps others be the very best and always has a positive attitude. Even after being hit in the face by a flyer at pep rally, she still had a smile on her face. She didn’t miss one practice this season and has been at every fundraiser to help raise money for our competitions. She will always be our Dora the Explorer. This year’s JV Cheerleading Triple threat award goes to Becca DiRocco.
Cross Country Boys V - This athlete is constantly pushing himself and his teammates to better performances. He is an ambassador for the sport and is always trying to recruit new runners to the team. He is able to race with the top competition in the MIAA and has garnered accolades and praise from his competitors. The 2013 triple threat award for Men’s Varsity Cross Country goes to Evan Moore
Cross Country Boys JV – This athlete has done all the right things. He has a positive attitude, a great work ethic and has improved his times dramatically from the beginning of the season. He has been a team motivator and a staunch adherent to doing the ‘right thing’. This year’s JV boys cross country triple threat award goes to Caleb Olsen.
Cross Country Girls – This year’s team included a stellar cast of athletes that came together for an incredible season. Lead by individual conference champion Kristen Kohles, the team finished as IAAM A conference champions. The triple threat winner goes to an athlete who has played a vital role for four years. She made an immediate impact on varsity as a freshman, and has become better each year. She is one of the key leaders on this team and she has helped set the tone for those who follow her. This year’s triple threat Award goes to Amanda Spaeth.
Field Hockey JV – This player is a rookie to field hockey much to the surprise of her teammates. She worked every day to improve her skill level, was encouraging to all players and allowed only 2 goals the entire season. As voted by her teammates, the triple threat award goes to Emma Gromacki.
Field Hockey V – This player was instrumental in the team’s successes this year. Not only is she a captain and a leader, she worked hard outside of the season to better her game and motivated her teammates to do the same. Her love of field hockey is evident and she makes others appreciate the game more. She overcame injuries to become one the leading scorers. This year’s Triple Threat Award is presented to Lindsay Kraus.
Football JV –Devin has worked extremely hard all year long including the offseason. His hard work and dedication is evident with the success he has had on the field rushing for over 150 yards in a game on multiple occasions. He was very consistent on a daily basis coming to practice with enthusiasm making all the players around him better. This year’s Triple Threat Award for JV football goes to Devin Darrington.
Football V – This player overcame major shoulder surgery in the offseason and worked extremely hard to get back on the field to have a very productive season. He led the defense with 105 tackles. He also contributed on offense filling in at fullback and also blocking from the wing/tight end position. He became an unselfish team player doing everything that was asked of him and showed great leadership on and off the field. He showed accountability and great character this season and will surely be missed. This year’s triple threat award for V football goes to Gus Lane.
Soccer, Boys JV – This athlete met all the criteria of the triple threat award because he worked hard to make himself and teammates better. He also showed good sportsmanship which is important for the game. He always came into pre-season fit which was good because he was focused on improving his personal game while others were still attempting to pass the fitness test. He came into the season as one of the leaders even before team captains were voted. He helped the freshmen class adapt to the fast pace of high school soccer. He set good examples by always being on time to practice and being focused at all times, he believed in himself which enabled me to have the confidence in making him team captain. When things are not going his way, he was calm and found ways to fix it. This year’s triple threat award for JV boys’ soccer goes to Spencer Langbein.
Soccer, Boys V – The 2013 Triple threat winner showed every day that leadership is not just about an armband. It is about action. It is about holding yourself and your teammates accountable. It is about being able to give and receive constructive criticism in the spirit that it is intended. It is about giving 100% - 100% of the time. Devin Smaldore played every position on the field except goalkeeper. The program will miss his tenacity next year.
Soccer, Girls JV – This player cam to practice and games and gave 100% all of the time. I never had to tell her to pick it up or work harder. She was a good role model to the rest of the team. She did an awesome job this year and was a pleasure to coach. This year’s Triple Threat Award for girls JV soccer goes to Taylor Brewer.
Soccer, Girls V – On rare occasions, a student athlete comes along that is head and shoulders above anyone in a very long time. This year’s team was blessed with 3 seniors, all of whom were very caring. It would be very easy to miss this year’s winner because everything she does is done with quite confidence and leadership. It’s an honor to be able to recognize her for all that she has done. This year’s Triple Threat Award for girls varsity soccer goes to Sophie Centi.
Tennis, Girls JV – This player was always enthusiastic, capable and dependable. Always put the interest of the tennis program first, before personal preferences. This year’s Triple Threat Award for JV Tennis goes to Kelly Foulk.
Tennis, Girls V – This player finished the season a perfect 10 and 0 at the number 1 singles position and won the post season tournament in a thrilling 3 set and almost 3 hour match against Mt. de Sales. She lost only one set the entire season. She was a great teammate and helped out with whatever was asked of her in practices. She was not only a great teammate but a leader both on the court when she was playing and off the court cheering on her teammates. This year’s Triple threat award for varsity tennis goes to freshman Alexa Martinez. Congrats Alexa!
Volleyball, Boys JV –This player works to improve himself, his team and the game. He improved himself while always supporting his teammates and even helping his coach on a number of occasions. A true student of the game, he would always know what position anyone on the court needed to be in at any given time. This young man played for two seasons on the JV and never once did I hear him utter a negative word or a complaint. It was great seeing his level of play increase over the offseason and earn him a spot on the court. His coach is looking forward to seeing him develop into a great volleyball player in the years to come. This year’s triple threat award for JV boys’ volleyball goes to Tim Yantz.
Volleyball, Boys V – From the first day of this player brought a certain intensity, a leadership quality rarely seen in most high school athletes. His passion and work ethic made those around him better every day in practice and brought out the best in his teammates during every match. His ability to lead by example provided a source of energy and competitive attitude the entire team utilized to achieve success. This year’s Triple Threat Award for men’s varsity volleyball goes to Brad Paszkiewicz.
Volleyball, Girls JV – As a team captain and the starting setter, she was an integral part of the success of our team this year. Her athletic abilities have allowed her to become a strong, consistent volleyball player. She continues to work hard to improve her setting abilities and always wants to know what she can do to improve. Her leadership as a captain was consistently positive throughout the season. She encouraged her teammates, picked them up, and even stayed after practice to help our “newbies” with their serving. She is always asking what she can do to improve herself as a player, as well as make the team stronger. She is a stellar athlete and a young woman and is extremely deserving of this award. This year’s Triple Threat Award for JV girls Volleyball goes to Parker Day.
Volleyball, Girls V – This player is a four year member of the varsity team, a four year starter and a co-captain the past two seasons. She is self-motivated, well organized, arrives well ahead of time, sees what needs to be done and gets it done, always has a positive outlook and brings out the best in others by tutoring and offering vocal support. She has the admiration of the coaching staff, the love of her teammates and the respect of opposing players. Many famous people are known by one name – Elvis, Cher, Madonna; our recipient does them one better – she is known by only one letter – the letter ‘B’. This year’s triple threat award for girls’ varsity volleyball goes to Briana Lockhart.
