On Saturday, November 8, the John Carroll Moot Court Team competed with schools from all over the State of Maryland in the 4th annual Moot Court Competition at the University of Baltimore School of Law. Our Patriots were represented by Olivia Stepanian '16 and Edward Benner '17.
After the first round against Franklin High School (who have appeared at the competition before and are perennial favorites in Mock Trial) a judge who had been observing the competition, noted that John Carroll's match against Franklin was probably one of the best she has seen in the four years of the competition. The judges in every single competition complimented Olivia and Edward and the students from the other schools, stating how impressed they were with their poise, ability to think on their feet, and respond to judges’ questions.
Moot Court, which involves appellate advocacy, not courtroom law, is often difficult and frightening many law school students, as one of the attorney judges readily admitted during the competition. For Olivia and Edward to compete as high school students is amazing, and the fact that they were continually complemented on their advocacy skills by practicing attorneys and judges is impressive.
As far as the competition goes, Olivia and Edward made it past the elimination rounds and faced Franklin again, in the quarterfinals, where Franklin was victorious
Thanks to all who have shown interest in and support for the team, and congratulations to Olivia and Edward for such an impressive performance.
