The William J. Sacco Critical Thinking Foundation, which provides scholarships to graduating seniors for excellence in applied mathematics and critical thinking, hosted its 5th Annual Awards Banquet on Sunday, March 6, 2016. This year's scholarship winner nominated by John Carroll was Claire Grunewald. Claire is a member of John Carroll’s first four-year class STEM Academy and has volunteered for numerous STEM-related events. She also participates in Maryland Math League contests and recently took a voluntary test sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. Claire plans to study biomedical/environmental engineering in college.
The foundation also honored Mrs. Beverly Markel with the William J. Sacco Mathematics Educator Award. Mrs. Markel teaches Honors Algebra II and Advanced Geometry, and she serves as Math Department Chair. She also offers individual student tutoring and proctors after-school study hall, Maryland Math League, and American Mathematics competitions. She is a leading member of John Carroll’s Academic Counci and played a significant role in the formation of John Carroll’s STEM Academy.
