Two JC seniors are two of only twelve high school students in grades ten through twelve to be selected for this high school journalism program funded by The Scripps Howard Foundation.
Lauren Fabiszak Brianna GeorgeFor her Class of 2014 Senior Project, Lauren Fabiszak will spend three weekend days over the next seven months learning the foundations of broadcast journalism. Fellow senior, Brianna George, who is staging the first John Carroll pageant for her project, will join her.
After a rigorous and competitive application process that included an application, recommendation letters, writing samples, an essay, and a job interview conducted by WMAR staff members, Lauren and Brianna are two of only twelve high school students in grades ten through twelve to be selected for this high school journalism program funded by The Scripps Howard Foundation. They must maintain at least a 2.8 GPA to remain in the program.
As these students learn the intricacies of broadcast journalism, they will interact with local and national journalists as well as graduates of the program. A primary program goal is to open the students’ minds to the importance of the ethics and values true journalism contains.
Throughout the experience, as they work their way through the program’s curriculum, Lauren and Brianna and the other ten students will write, report, produce, and anchor a weekly show called Teen Perspective 2News which will air the last Saturday of each month at noon on WMAR-TV ABC2. The show is taped in the same studio used for the station’s daily news broadcasts.
Having both Lauren and Brianna be selected to this highly respected program gives us another reason to be Patriot Proud of members of the Class of 2014.
