Full Speed Ahead for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math
The STEAM Academy at The John Carroll School provides opportunities for advanced students who have a strong interest and aptitude to explore different fields in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Academy equips participants with real-world skills and experience through a variety of college-preparatory, honors, and Advanced Placement coursework; and supports independent discovery.
A STEAM-related capstone project is a graduation requirement and students who complete the Academy curriculum will earn a diploma with an Honors Distinction in STEAM.
Entrance Requirements
Incoming freshmen can apply for the STEAM Academy and will be evaluated based on High School Placement test scores, transcript and application. Students will be notified of their acceptance to the STEAM Academy as part of the acceptance package. The deadline to apply for the 2022-2023 school year is January 22, 2023.
Curriculum Overview
Admitted STEAM Academy students will take STEAM Centered Learning (SCL1) in freshman year and SCL2 in sophomore year to introduce various topics and fields of study within the five focus areas. Whenever possible, SCL courses will incorporate hands on projects. Upon completion of both SCL classes, STEAM Academy students can choose to take additional classes in a specific discipline for further study. Along with the basic John Carroll graduation requirements, STEAM students must have completed 4 credits each of Science and Math plus 3 full credits of STEAM electives by the end of their senior year.
