What began as an early spring walk through the woods for Fine Arts teacher Mr. Michael Gaudreau ’70, evolved into an award-winning moment of truth for the artist when he discovered bones from a cow that was consumed by the harsh winter. Moved by the beauty of the bones’ forms and shadows cast by the sun, Mr. Gaudreau responded to the fierce act of nature by creating the “edgiest” painting he’s ever done. “I wanted to see if I could take a subject normally thought of as disgusting or disturbing and show how light and shadow can transform it. It's nature and the cycle of life brutal, sad, and, beautiful,” Mr. Gaudreau explains of his piece titled, Spring Thaw. A member of the Pastel Society of America, Mr. Gaudreau was awarded the Art du Pastel en France for his drawing featured in an exhibition of works among the most accomplished pastel artists in the world. Out of 1,496 entries from 16 different countries, 175 paintings were chosen.
