The John Carroll School and Battelle Sign Agreement in Support of STEM Academy
Posted December 11, 2012
Richard J. O’Hara, President of The John Carroll Schoo,l and Dean Ertwine, Vice President for Battelle, met on Monday, December 10, 2012, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in support of The John Carroll School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Academy.
The John Carroll School and Battelle have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to excite and prepare John Carroll students for future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The workforce needs of Harford County and the State of Maryland over the foreseeable future will demand highly skilled employees who are problem-solvers, innovators, and inventors. Additionally, they will require employees who are independent and can present work logically and persuasively.
The John Carroll School STEM Academy was launched in September 2012. This innovative program promises to provide John Carroll students with the skills and knowledge to enter the best STEM colleges and universities in the country. With standard, honors, and Advanced Placement curricular offerings focused on these four key subjects, students will learn a variety of "real world" applications that will prepare them for college majors, as well as expose them to STEM careers. Students who participate in the Academy will be eligible to receive a “Diploma with Distinction” in STEM. Engineering, computer-aided design, architecture, and robotics are just some of the courses offered, and an entire course of study has been mapped out to provide a program of excellence.
Battelle will support the John Carroll STEM Academy by offering students internships, job shadowing experiences, and student research support in their Junior and Senior years. Additionally, John Carroll faculty and professionals from Battelle will work together to develop curriculum enhancements for classroom teaching.
The John Carroll School has a strong reputation for preparing bright and motivated students for the top math and science university programs in the country while grounding students in the liberal arts. Each year, 99 percent of John Carroll graduates go on to college or university and receive record amounts of scholarship assistance. Once they have completed their education, more than 55 percent of our alumni return to the Harford County region to live and work.
Harford County and John Carroll are fortunate to have Battelle actively involved in the community. “As the largest independent research and development organization, Battelle provides innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs.” This mission aligns with John Carroll’s goal to shape our students to embrace opportunities and excel as responsible citizens in a global society.
