Congratulations to the Patriots who received recognition at the 2019 Underclass Awards Assembly which took place on Tuesday, April 2. This awards assembly recognizes students whose performance and effort stands out as truly excellent. This year's underclass award winners are listed below.
The Judith Resnik Award was presented to Helen Lortie for outstanding performance in mathematics and science and participation in advanced placement courses.
The Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society Award was presented to Katie Yurechko for being an outstanding science and math student.
The Rensselaer Medal Award was presented to Sarah Xiang for superlative academic achievement and motivation toward a career in science, engineering, and technology. This award also includes a merit scholarship, if she is accepted and enrolls at Rensselaer.
The Jim Chrismer Excellence in US History Award was presented to Katie Yurechko for her excellence in the study of US History. Along with the honor of the award Katie will have her Social Studies books paid for next year by the Social Studies Department.
The George Washington University Book Award was presented to Emma Balint for embodying the GW drive and spirit, specifically with her academic excellence, leadership outside of the classroom, diversity of thought, and ability to put knowledge into action. Emma will receive George Washington’s Leadership Lessons, have her GW application fee waived, and, if she applies to GW, will be eligible for a scholarship just for GW Book Award recipients.
McGann/Cumpston Awards were presented to six students, pictured above with members of the McGann/Cumpston family.
The Annie McGann Cumpston Memorial Scholarship was created in May 2003 by family members in memory of Annie McGann Cumpston, daughter of Tom and Megan McGann ’82 Cumpston. Annie’s loving and generous spirit inspired this scholarship and the scholarship is meant to recognize and celebrate the loving and generous spirit in John Carroll Students. This year’s recipients are:
