The John Carroll School Board of Trustees is proud to announce that Dr. Sue Weller Kutcher '85 is the 2022 recipient of the Reverend Charles K. Riepe Alumni Award. Established in 1975, the Reverend Charles K. Riepe Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and community service, and is the highest award given to a John Carroll alumna/us.
A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Sue received her PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1995. She worked as a senior scientist and manager of the Research & Development division of Brimrose Corporation, a high-tech company that manufactures optical components and systems, for 27 years. During her time there, Sue helped secure over $65 million dollars in research funding and collaborated on projects with the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy and NASA.
In addition to her professional success, Sue is deeply committed to community service. Sue currently serves on the Board of Directors of Global Adoption Services, Inc., a non-profit adoption service that is designed to benefit orphaned and special needs children. Sue is also vice president of the Kutcher Foundation, which runs a number of innovative, community charitable programs that promote youth and leadership development, mentoring and making a positive difference in the world and our local community. In addition, she serves as a board member of the William J. Sacco Critical Thinking Foundation and has been an active volunteer for the Mark D. Pacione Foundation.
Sue and her husband, John Kutcher, are proud Patriot parents to Tim '15, Steven '17 and Joey '22. As both an alumna and parent, Sue is passionate about providing a transformative John Carroll education to the next generation of Patriots. A dedicated and loyal volunteer, Sue currently serves as co-chair of the "One Mission, Millions of Dreams" comprehensive campaign. For more than a decade, she generously provided her time and support for numerous John Carroll events and initiatives such as golf tournaments, the Lighting the Way capital campaign and the past three Galas, one of which she served as co-chair. Sue has also been a frequent athletics volunteer, supporting the baseball, boys volleyball and track programs.
Sue's commitment to bettering the world through her professional and charitable endeavors inspires those around her and embodies what it truly means to be a Patriot. In keeping with John Carroll tradition, she will deliver the commencement remarks to the Class of 2022 during this year's graduation ceremony.
