We understand that sending your child to a private school is a significant investment for your family that requires planning and drawing from a variety of resources. This page is intended to share opportunities available through John Carroll as well as some third-party partners; additional resources may also be available.

Tuition

Tuition for the 2023–24 school year is $19,500 for domestic students. The tuition rate is set for the upcoming school year by the Board of Trustees each January. Additional costs apply for technology (including the purchase of a laptop), uniforms, textbooks, new student registration, parent association membership and bus transportation (optional).

A variety of payment plans ranging from 1-pay to 22-pay options are available. Payment plans are required for 4, 10, 20 or 21 pay plans and are set up during enrollment in Veracross through VC Pay. VC Pay accounts may also be used to pay for incidentals during the school year, such as for field trips.  

Please note that tuition insurance is required for any payment plan other than 1-pay.

Financial Aid

Admissions staff will provide guidance for all families interested in the financial aid process. Our Financial Aid committee closely reviews your family’s unique financial situation based on evaluation from FACTS Management Company (FACTS), a third-party vendor and makes allocations based on whether your child qualifies for aid. Please review John Carroll’s Financial Aid Policy before applying.

The John Carroll School offers limited financial assistance to eligible families, based on documented financial need. Financial Aid grants are awarded annually and are deducted from the tuition. Families must reapply every year. The school reserves the right to rescind awards if the required documentation of income, assets and other data is not provided by the deadlines that are published.

To be considered for need-based aid for the 2023–24 school year, families must submit the online FACTS financial aid application between October 1 and December 16, 2022. 2021 tax returns and W-2s must be uploaded to FACTS with the financial aid application, 2022 W-2s must be uploaded by February 15, 2023 and 2022 tax returns no later than May 1, 2023 for income verification.

New families are notified of awards as part of their acceptance package; returning families are notified in the re-enrollment contracts in Veracross.

Multi-Child Family Discounts

The Multi-Child Family Discount  provides families who have more than one child enrolled at John Carroll a reduction in tuition. The second child will receive $500 off tuition; the third child would receive an additional $500 off of tuition and so forth.

Scholarships

The John Carroll School offers the following scholarship opportunities to exceptionally qualified boys and girls. 

Merit-based scholarships recognize our top incoming freshmen who stand out through their GPA, HSPT scores, personal interview and references. Our merit-based scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and are not guaranteed. Freshmen admitted to The John Carroll School are automatically considered for most merit awards if we receive their complete admission applications by the December 20 deadline and will be notified as part of their acceptance package.

Archbishop John Carroll Scholarship Program
This is the most prestigious academic scholarship awarded to students in the 8th grade scoring a high national composite score on the High School Placement Test (HSPT). As a Carroll Scholar, you will not only receive an academic scholarship, but you will have the opportunity to take the most rigorous course offerings available through our Advanced Placement Capstone Program. When you successfully pass the requisite Advanced Placement courses throughout your four years at John Carroll, you will graduate with an additional AP Capstone distinction. This will help you to aspire to the best levels of higher education. This program is by invitation only; qualifying students will receive an invitation to apply in early January.

Rev. Charles Riepe Scholar Athlete Scholarship 
The Rev. Charles K. Riepe Scholar Athlete Scholarship provides several scholarships each year to incoming freshmen, supplemental to the regular tuition assistance grants made by the school, to deserving scholar athletes. The Rev. Charles K. Riepe Scholar Athlete Endowment Fund is named for the first President, second Principal, former Trustee and former Chaplain of The John Carroll School. It was funded by an endowed gift to the school in December 2006. Applicants must complete the FACTS Financial Aid Form by December 15, 2023 to be eligible for the grant. The Scholarship application deadline is January 1, 2024.

Donald L. Sudbrink Scholarship
The Donald L. Sudbrink Scholarship was established in 1990 in honor of John Carroll’s former principal. This $1,200, four-year award ($300 each year) is given annually to the incoming student with the highest overall composite score on the HSPT Test. There is no application for this scholarship; all freshman applicants are eligible for this award. The Scholarship recipient will be notified in mid-February.

Donald Thomas Reynolds, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
The Donald Thomas Reynolds, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund is established at The John Carroll School through the generosity of his son, Donald Thomas Reynolds, III ’89, and the Reynolds Family, as well as friends and supporters. This fund assists students with documented financial need who demonstrate the promise of benefiting from a John Carroll education and the ongoing achievement as a student.  Recipients must meet all of the following criteria of The Donald Thomas Reynolds, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund:

• Receive admission to The John Carroll School in Maryland
• Demonstrate financial need through the regular financial aid application process, warranting the award of need-based scholarship support
• Maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA
• Maintain eligibility and good standing in the Boys Lacrosse Program
• Actively lead and/or organize a community based service program which reflects the values of Donald Thomas Reynolds, Jr.  Program must be approved by Donald T Reynolds, III.

Donna Selway Memorial Scholarship
The Donna Selway Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of longtime John Carroll French teacher, Donna Selway, by her family and friends. The $2,000, four-year scholarship ($500 each year) is given annually to an incoming freshman who maintained an A or B average in middle school and will choose French for their language of study at John Carroll. Joshua Hamer Memorial Scholarship
The Josh Hamer Memorial Scholarship was established at The John Carroll School to honor the lasting legacy of Joshua Hamer, and to assist young baseball players who wish to attend John Carroll. The Josh Hamer Memorial Scholarship is given to one incoming male baseball player who demonstrates academic excellence and a commitment to self. The Scholarship recognizes student/athletes who honor the principles of The John Carroll School and JC Patriots Baseball Program. The ideal candidate will show a dedicated and robust work ethic, demonstrate a high academic standard and seek to honor their community through compassion, faith, friendship and love. Application deadline is January 19, 2023.

Scott Wrzesien Memorial Scholarship 

The Scott Wrzesien Memorial Scholarship was established by Jordan Wrzesien to honor the memory of her father, Scott, who passed away from cancer. This scholarship will be granted to a John Carroll family directly affected by cancer, to assist with tuition and alleviate the stress during a difficult time. This scholarship will be applied against tuition for the awarded family. Applications are due by March 17, 2023.
